The first responses to the national church survey launched last week indicate a divergence between clergy and laity regarding church closure.

By Wednesday, more than 1,500 people had taken the survey, although much more is needed for a credible sample. Initial responses indicate that more than half of those involved in the ministry agree to the closure of the church, compared to less than half of those who receive the ministry. So far, about a fifth of those surveyed believe that church buildings will become unprofitable or that important lay people will step down and cannot be replaced.
