The Pepper Basham backbone holder
Savior of the lost
The Thorn Bearer by Pepper Basham is a powerful Christian historical novel and the first book in the Penned In Time series.
The book takes place in 1915 with some actions about the doomed Lusitania. Actual drowning reflects characters drowning in themselves. "She drowned. Oh god where are you "The past can be a cruel master who blinds us to God's love." God stayed … silent … all this love? It was never meant for me. "God is never silent, but in our pain we cannot always hear Him. The enemy's lies whisper that we are unworthy. "I will not make you believe the lies from the shadows." We need others who help us to point out God and help us to stand on the Word of God and knowing that we are loved.
God is the savior of sinners and we are all sinners who need a savior. "God doesn't want someone ruined like me to spoil their sky." None of us are ever worth standing before God, but His grace and love redeem us. Because of Jesus we can come to God as we are. It will change us from the inside.
A main theme of the novel is forgiveness. We have to forgive. Withholding forgiveness will not only hurt the other person, we will poison our own lives if we become bitter. "Your bitterness blinds you to seeing what God can do for a person in need of forgiveness." If we cannot forgive in our strength, we must God for His.
There is the theme of the return of the lost. We may fear the reception that we will receive, but our father longs to see us return home.
The topic of the fathers plays an important role. Some fathers are evil, spoil and ruin those they are supposed to protect. In contrast, we have our heavenly Father who loves us with eternal love.
Pepper Basham has created a wonderful set of characters that are realistic and easy to understand. I loved The Thorn Bearer and enjoyed meeting “new” friends. Now you can book two for me.
I got this book for free. A positive rating was not required and all views expressed are my own.
