The father of lies

"Because you are the child of your father, the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the start. He always hated the truth because there is no truth in him. If he lies, it matches his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies ”(John 8:44 nlt).

Before I was a Christian, I don't know that I actually saw temptation as temptation. I was probably thinking of an opportunity. When something looked funny, I thought, "Why not?" I would try this or that.

When I became a Christian, other believers warned me: “Greg, be careful! The devil will tempt you. "

"The devil? What do you mean by" the devil "?"

"Satan will try you," they said.

"But how do I know when I'm trying?"

"You will know."

I was in high school at the time and one of my classes was a very pretty girl. I noticed her, but she had never noticed me. She was in the front of the class and came up to me the day after class.

"Hello," she said. "What's your name?"

I was so stunned that I forgot my name for a moment. She stood there talking to me and I had no idea why.

"You know you're cute," she continued. "And you know what? My parents are gone for the weekend. Would you like to come to my house and stay there?"

And suddenly I realized what was going on. There it was, a temptation from the devil that other Christians had warned me of. How did I know? Because this never happened to me. Trust me. It just wasn't.

So I said no, although it wasn't that easy.

I learned something that day: temptation comes in attractive packages. Satan makes bad things look good. It makes evil things look appealing and makes deadly things look like they are the best experience you have ever had.

He is a liar. And he'll do anything to pull you down.
