Instruments of grace

Taking Risk by Melody Carlson is a perfect contemporary Christian novel for girls ages nine and up. It is the fourth book in the Being Zoey series.

I am considerably older than the target market, but I enjoy the series. There are divine lessons that we can all learn, no matter how old we are.

This book focuses on Jesus' commandments to love our enemies, forgiveness and grace. Eleven-year-old Zoey faces a girl who bullied her in an earlier book and explains: "I am challenged to love my enemies." We can find that when we pray for our enemies. We are experiencing a change of heart.

Forgiveness for past injuries must be given graciously. We forgive because we have been forgiven.

The novel shows that teen hormones emerge when the girls start noticing the boys. It is a difficult time that can create a range of emotions.

The Being Zoey series is written in the first person from Zoey's perspective. As such, the reader can easily be taken back through the years to when they were twelve. The series by Melody Carlson awakens memories and feelings of the reader and makes it easy to put yourself in Zoey.

This Being Zoey series is absolutely perfect for your daughters or granddaughters. They are all great stories with powerful divine lessons.

I got this book for free. A positive rating was not required and all views expressed are my own.

Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books (with a turnover of around 6.5 million) for young people, women and children. That's a lot of books, but mostly she sees herself as a "storyteller". Her young adult novels (diary of a teenage girl, True Colors, etc.) appeal to teenage girls all over the world. Your annual Christmas novels are becoming more popular every year. She has won a number of awards (including RT's Career Achievement Award, Rita, and Gold Medallion), and some of her books have been selected for film / television. Carlson has two adult sons and lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and yellow lab dog.

Sometimes I feel guilty for "torturing" my teenage and tween characters, but I do it for my readers. Being an adolescent is not easy, and it is comforting to read about someone who is in difficult times. But in the last Zoey book I really wanted to give her some victories. When they face challenges, they face them. And she even uses her newly found faith. The goal is for readers to have hope of their own lives when they see Zoey rise above their difficult circumstances.
