Ravi Zacharias and his wife Margie

Ravi Zacharias asked for prayer after he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

The apologist's doctors made the discovery after he underwent spinal surgery last month and had "very severe" pain.

The pain was so debilitating that he couldn't sleep at night.

While it was believed that this was a result of the operation, he said on Facebook that another biopsy revealed a malignant tumor on his sacrum.

He said the tumor shrinkage treatment would begin about four to five weeks after his back surgery healed.

While he had hoped to be back on duty in a few weeks, he now believes it will be summer at the earliest before he can resume his speaking engagements.

"We trust the Lord and believe that we have already seen evidence of his hand. For example, the tumor did not show up on previous scans and was only discovered by my surgeon who identified him during the operation," he said.

He thanked the well-wishers and supporters for praying for him in the past few weeks and said that he and his wife Margie had received "literally thousands" of messages from around the world.

"I firmly believe that God directed and caused my surgeon to discover this tumor. Margie, I and our family are so grateful for your continued prayers for the upcoming journey," he said.

Finally, he asked people to pray for relief from the pain he continues to experience at night.

"We trust the Lord for his purpose. Please also pray that God will take away this terrible night pain, which is the hardest part of waiting," he said.

"In the meantime, I would like to sincerely thank you for the support of the ministry, which is continuing unabated worldwide. We need you to stay with us."
