In all honesty, I never wanted to make my own tomato sauce because it took so much time.
But now? I foresee homemade tomato sauce in both of our future prospects.
Served on a whole 30 meatballs or healthy turkey meatballs.

You might be wondering why on earth would I come up with a homemade tomato sauce recipe when you can easily pick up a can or two at the grocery store. Canned tomato sauce is a fantastic pantry BUT the fresh instant pot tomato sauce adds a new element to your kitchen! This homemade sauce has a much fresher, more unique taste than typical canned sauces and really isn't that difficult to make as the instant pot does all the work!
You will love the ingredients this instant tomato sauce needs – they are whole foods and fragrant, aromatic spices and NO fun additives that you cannot pronounce. Here's what you need to do to get started:
- olive oil
- Tomato paste
- Dried basil
- Dried tarragon
- Dried oregano
- Black pepper
- Head of garlic
How to do Instant Pot Tomato Sauce
Turn on the instant pot and set it to sautee mode. Add the oil and onion and cook until brown.
Add all of the remaining ingredients except for the extra oil and garlic and stir to combine in the instant pot.
Prepare the garlic
Cut the tips off the garlic and rub oil on them. Tightly wrap the garlic in 2 layers of aluminum foil and place it in the center of the ingredients in the instant pot.
Set the instant pot to “seal” and cook under manual high pressure for 20 minutes.
Immediately release the steam and pour the sauce into your blender. Take the garlic out of the package and put as much as your heart desires into the blender. Season with salt and bend until smooth.

How do you prevent tomato sauce from burning in the instant pot?
Since tomatoes consist of a lot of water, there is no great risk of burns with this sauce. However, when mixing, you should make sure that the condiments in this recipe don't touch the bottom of your instant pot. This prevents burning!
