"O for a better path with God" by William Cowper
O for a closer way with God,
A calm and heavy frame,
A light that shines on the street
That leads me to the lamb!
Where is the bliss that I knew
When did I first seek the Lord?
Where is the soul refreshing prospect
Of Jesus and his word?
What peaceful hours I enjoyed then!
How sweet her memory is!
But they left a painful emptiness
The world can never fill up.
Return, oh holy dove, return,
Sweet messenger of calm;
I hate the sins that made you grieve.
And drove you from my chest.
The dearest idol that I have known
Whatever this idol may be
Help me tear it from your throne
And only adore you.
So my way should be close to God,
Calm and serene my body;
So purer light is supposed to mark the road
That leads me to the lamb.
