As we begin a new year in the liturgical calendar, we continue our weekly series of poems that coincide with this week's readings (revised shared lesson and narrative lesson).

We offer a wide selection of classical and contemporary poems by various poets that stimulate our imaginations with thoughts about how the biblical text speaks to us in the 21st century. We hope that these poems will be fruitful not only for preachers preaching these texts next Sunday, but also for members of the Church in the pews to prepare our minds for the encounter with the biblical texts.

"Freedom, justice, peace and lasting joy (arise)
when the poet comes, when the poet speaks,
when the preacher comes as a poet. "
– Walter Brueggemann
