Pastor John MacArthur of the Grace Community Church in California has stated that his church will continue to hold personal church services with full churches, which violates the state restrictions prohibiting personal services.
Pastor MacArthur explained the biblical basis for his decision in a Friday announcement, saying, "Compliance would be disobedience to our Lord's clear orders. Government officials have no right to interfere in church affairs in a way that God-given undermines or disregards the authority of pastors and elders. "
He wrote: "Christ is Lord of all. He is the only true head of the Church (Ephesians 1:22; 5:23; Colossians 1:18). He is also king of kings – ruler of every earthly authority (1 Timothy ) 6:15; Revelation 17:14; 19:16) The Grace Community Church has always stood immovably on these biblical principles, and as its people we are subject to the will and commandments as revealed in Scripture, therefore, and we don't want to agree to a government-imposed moratorium on our weekly church service or other regular corporate meetings, which would be disobedience to our Lord's clear commandments.
"Some will think that such a firm statement is inexorably inconsistent with the order to be subject to government agencies in Romans 13 and 1, Peter 2. The scripture requires careful, conscientious obedience to all government agencies, including kings, governors, Employers, and their agents (in Peter's words, "not only those who are good and gentle, but also those who are unreasonable" (1 Peter 2:18)), unless the government agency tries to exercise ecclesiastical authority or Ordering Orders If we prohibit our obedience to God's law, their authority must be followed whether we agree with their decisions or not, in other words, Romans 13 and 1 Peter 2 still bind the conscience of individual Christians Civil authorities as powers obey that God has determined himself.
"While the civilian government has divine authority to govern the state, none of these texts (or any other) grant rulers jurisdiction over the church. God has established three institutions within human society: the family, the state, and the Church. Each institution has an area of authority with jurisdictional limits that must be respected. The authority of a father is limited to his own family. The authority of church leaders (which Christ delegates to them) is limited to church affairs. And government is specific charged with overseeing and protecting civil peace and well-being within the borders of a nation or community. God has not given civil rulers authority over the doctrine, practice, or politics of the Church. The biblical framework limits the authority of any institution The Church has not the right to i n interfere with family affairs and ignore parental authority. Parents have no authority to manage civil affairs while circumventing government officials. Likewise, government officials have no right to interfere in church affairs that undermine or disregard the God-given authority of pastors and elders.
"If one of the three institutions goes beyond their jurisdiction, it is the duty of the other institutions to reduce that overreach, so if a government official issues ordinances regulating worship (such as bans on singing, attendance restrictions, or bans) against gatherings and services ) he goes outside the legitimate limits of his God-given authority as an official and arrogates himself the authority that God expressly grants only to the Lord Jesus Christ as sovereign over his Kingdom, which is the Church, and his rule is given to the local churches by those pastors and elders who teach his word (Matthew 16: 18–19; 2 Timothy 3: 16–4: 2). "
Grace Community Church's decision was made in direct contradiction to an announcement by Governor Gavin Newsom on July 13. At that time, the governor announced that churches, fitness centers, and various companies in 30 California counties had to be closed. The only exceptions would be external activities or pick-up services.
Pastor MacArthur said, "God has not given bourgeois rulers authority over the teaching, practice, or politics of the Church. The biblical framework limits the authority of each institution to its specific jurisdiction. The Church has no right to interfere in the affairs of individuals Families and ignore parental authority. Parents have no authority to manage civil matters while circumventing government officials. "
He said that his church "would now respectfully inform our citizens that they have exceeded their legitimate jurisdiction and that fidelity to Christ forbids us to comply with the restrictions that they want to impose on our corporate services."
