Everybody Counts is more than a counting book: it contains big numbers and big thoughts.

Everyone counts: a counting story from 0 to 7.5 billion by Kristin Roskifte. Magicon Fortag (Wide-Eyed Editions), 2020, 56 pages. (Originally published in Norway, 2018)

Reading level: Picture book, 4-8 years

Recommended for: every age

We start with "nobody". No people, that is, just a monochrome bucolic landscape. Then: "One person. He lies in bed and counts his heartbeat. He wonders how many people are looking at the same stars. “Next page:“ Two people in a forest. One of them says something that the other will remember for the rest of his life. “The other is the little boy who was lying in bed counting heartbeats.

Next page: “3 people on a podium. 2 of them are thrilled to be in the top 3. “It is easy to see who is not enthusiastic about his facial expression. But then: “4 people in a band. One is a twin. One of them thinks of her daughter's birthday present. One of them will be injured soon. “Wow, how can we say that? By recognizing the same people in other situations of 6, 10, 20 or 45 people and following their stories. At 1000 we jump to a view of the Earth from space. "Seven and a half billion people on the same planet. Each one of them has its own story. Everyone counts. You are one of them! "

It doesn't end there. Two pages of questions ask readers to find individuals and their clues. The final route tells the story of each picture and answers the pointers given in the text. Characters differ in color, clothing, posture and expression. So it's easy to find them again if you pay attention. So this is much more than a counting book: it is also a question book, a puzzle book, a search book and (at the end) a philosophy book in which 1000 people search for a comet. "None of them know exactly what the meaning of life is."

(Do you? If you don't, can you prove that "everyone counts"?)

Even though we're pretty sure what the meaning of life is, there is a lot to think about here, even at a four-year level. People make the world in its diversity, activity and networking. As a plus, the content is family positive.
