China has ordered Christian villagers to give up their belief and instead worship the leaders of the Communist Party of the Nation.

The Chinese authorities visited Christian homes in Linfen, northern Shanxi Province in April, and told residents who were receiving social benefits that they should remove all crosses and replace all portrayals of Jesus with portraits of Chairman Mao and President Xi Jinping. Journal of Religious Freedom, Bitter winter.

All Christians who refused to comply had canceled their social welfare subsidies.

A local pastor told Request Winter: "All impoverished households in the city have been asked to show pictures of Mao Zedong. The government is trying to remove our beliefs and wants to become God instead of Jesus."

In a village, a Christian told the government-sponsored Three-Self Church how the authorities violently removed all Christian images, including all images of Jesus in his home. Officials replaced the pictures with a portrait of Mao Zedong.

Officials told the Christian: "Impoverished religious households cannot get money from the state for nothing – they have to obey the Communist Party for the money they receive."

In another incident in May, the authorities entered a Christian's home in eastern Shandong Province. There they posted portraits of Mao Zedong and Xi Jinping and said, "These are the greatest gods. If you want to worship someone, they are."

In Henan's city of Shangqiu, officials visited an elderly Christian's home and canceled her minimum allowance because they discovered a picture of a cross on her door.

The older Christian said: "They immediately tore it down. After that, both my minimum living allowance and my poverty alleviation allowance were canceled. I reached a dead end. I have diabetes and need regular injections."

In June, authorities in Henan Province arrested a Christian man and two other Christian women were injured when officials raided the Sunzhuang Church. They destroyed the church with cranes and other high-performance machines.
