Life is of course too short to live without prejudice, but what bundles some prejudices in different groups? I am fascinated by the way in which seemingly unrelated attitudes are held together by social ties and opinions become markers of belonging. There are still cities in the UK where you can tell the football team's parenting religion that they support it. In the 1930s she believed that belief in eugenics was progressive. In the 1980s, you were referred to as a crypto-fascist. And now it seems that attitudes towards vaccination correlate with opinions about Pope Francis.
