(UPDATED) Armenian Evangelicals praise the first US President to formally describe the 1915 massacre by Ottoman Turks.

The systematic killing and deportation of hundreds of thousands of Armenians by the armed forces of the Ottoman Empire in the early 20th century was "genocide," the United States officially declared on Saturday, when President Joe Biden used the very word after the White House avoided it for decades out of fear to alienate the ally Turkey.

Turkey reacted with excitement, and the Foreign Minister said his country "will not receive lessons about our history from anyone". A grateful Armenia said it valued Biden's "position of principle" as a step towards "restoring truth and historical justice".

Biden followed an election promise he made on Saturday a year ago – the annual commemoration of the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day – to acknowledge that the events that began in 1915 were a deliberate effort to exterminate the Armenians .

While previous presidents have offered somber reflections on the darker moment in history, they have diligently avoided using the term genocide for concern that it would complicate relations with Turkey, a NATO ally and a major power in the Middle East would.

But Biden campaigned for a promise to make human rights a central guide in his foreign policy. He argued last year that the failure to label the atrocities against the Armenian people as genocide would pave the way for future mass atrocities. An estimated 2 million Armenians were deported and 1.5 million killed in the events known as Metz Yeghern.
