Benedict XVI His biographer Peter Seewald claimed that he is “very frail” and has a bacterial infection.

Seewald, whose latest biography of the Pope Emeritus will be published in English later this year, visited Benedict on Saturday to give him a copy of the book. After the visit, he told a German newspaper that Benedikt had been "very fragile" in Bavaria since his return from his sick older brother, Mgr. Georg Ratzinger, in June.

Meanwhile, several news agencies have taken up his claim that the 93-year-old emeritus pope has facial erysipelas, a bacterial skin infection that causes a painful red rash.

The Catholic Herald is currently looking for confirmation of the claim.
