Happy Easter! This Easter Sunday is probably quite different from our expectations of getting dressed, going to church, eating with family and friends, and enjoying the spring air. This Easter we are all at home looking for protection from a virus that has conquered the world and there is no telling when it will be over. But the story of Easter, the resurrection and victory of Jesus Christ over death, reminds us that in the midst of uncertainty we know how it will end. We know that Jesus wins!
The old hymn "Because he lives" says:
“Because he lives, I can face myself tomorrow.
Because he lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know that he holds my future
And life is worth living just because he lives. "
While we cannot participate in all of the traditions that we associate with Easter, we should take the opportunity to return to the true meaning of Easter. The death and resurrection of Jesus means that we can face ourselves without fear every day because we know that he is in control. Although our lives have taken on a new look, it is still worth living and celebrating simply because our Savior lives. Every day brings new developments that we may not know about or are not prepared for, but God knows them because he holds the future in his hand. Jesus lives, which means that we can live in communion with him.
Why do we describe Good Friday as "good"?
Looking back on that day, we can see that the sacrifice of Christ, though painful, has led to our ability to have a direct connection with God. If such a day can be celebrated, this Easter should be celebrated all the more despite the unexpected circumstances. Let us all decide that we will do well even if this is not your typical Easter!
Many churches stream Easter services live on Zoom, Facebook Live or other online platforms. Therefore, it is easier than ever to join worship, study the Bible, and fellowship with the Body of Christ. I would encourage you to still dress in your Sunday best, take pictures, sit down to dinner and have fun with the family. Call your loved ones and take part in the celebrations. Celebration is what you make of it, and Easter is much more than the Easter bunny or an egg hunt. This could even be a chance to start one or two new family traditions!
Happy Easter again! I pray that this Easter will be a time to reflect and remember the resurrection of Jesus and a celebration of the new life that is given to us all in Him.
