A snapshot of the war

A wing and a prayer by Julie Lessman is a powerful one
Christian historical novel that explores love and trust in God in wartime.
It is the first book in the Cousins O’Connor series and what an epic it is
promises to be.

The novel leads the reader from 1943 to the end
of war with locations in America, Britain and mainland Europe. We follow a
brave young woman who wants to make her contribution to war while recognizing her
dream to fly.

Our upbringing affects the way we run ours
Life. Gabe, the brave young heroine, was abandoned on the street as a child
before adoption. This reminds the reader that no matter what we start with
Life, God longs to take us into his family.

Gabe's past means that she knows what it feels like
be ignored. She fights for the outsider, no matter what the consequences
for her. The reader is reminded that some battles are not ours but ours
Lords. We just have to stand still.

Trust is not easy. "I don't trust many
Men … and that includes God. “We cannot project our earthly answers onto it
God. God is God and can always be trusted. Trust in people must be built
over time.

There is a fine line between love and hate.
When we are hurt, we can hit in pain, but we don't always mean what we do

Prayer is powerful. “Prayer was second
Breathing. "Prayer must be part of our nature. Prayer brings us closer to God.
"With every prayer she could feel God's presence." Sometimes everything we can in life
to do is to pray. "You can't always be there for her … But my prayers can."
Covering someone in prayer has the potential to work miracles.

Julie Lessman did a lot of research
thoroughly. The reader is briefed on the events of the Second World War
read. As a historian with a passion for World War II, I found it all fascinating.

Julie Lessman is a masterful writer. She weaves
their story and reveals the heart of God to us. I look forward to much more from

I got this book for free. A positive rating was not required and all views expressed are my own.

She is determined to give everything for the war overseas …
Even if it means losing everything in a war of the heart.

Gabriella (Gabe) O’Connor, a street orphan who was abused and abandoned by an alcoholic father at the age of five, has never let a man stand in her way. If a handsome flight officer foils her plans to become an Air Force Service WASP pilot for women, she is determined to join the war effort as best she can. Her chance comes when she “borrows” foreign correspondence cards from the Boston Herald, where her father is the editor, to stow them on a medical ship at the front.

Lieutenant Reece Kincaid makes Gabe O’Connor a problem as soon as she enters Avenger Field as a WASP cadet. As the oldest brother of a boy whose jaw was broken at primary school, Reece is familiar with her reputation as a charismatic ringleader and idiosyncratic hooligan who challenges every man and nun from primary school to college. Finally, as her WASP flight instructor, Reece sells Gabe when she does a dangerous stunt. When he was an evacuation pilot in France eight months later, their lives intertwined again and they were exposed to a danger as dangerous as the German tanks roaming the Reichswald: a love that no one expected.

Here's an ongoing clip from two chapters in which Alex Gabe brings home from the annual Bar-J Ranch Barbecue & Square Dance for the city of Sweetwater. On crutches because of a badly sprained ankle, Gabe gets Alex to help her grill all day until he finally takes her back to their barracks.

It was still early for a Friday night, so everything was quiet except for the faint cry of a distant owl and the rasp of Gabe's uneven breathing. "Alex, I … can't thank you enough," she whispered, pulsatingly chaotic as he reached around to open the screen door.

"You're welcome. It was fun," he said, gently pulling her out of the way to pull her far. He supported the screen with his hip as he reached behind it to snap the spirited knob of the old wooden door wiggle and Gabes heart stutter with his dark bristles near his jaw.

Just inches from her lips.

And then she realized that it was fun. More fun than ever in her life and she didn't want it to end. Each. She wanted to thank him and she wanted to touch him all at once. Without a second thought, she leaned forward and ran her lips over his cheek, completely unprepared for the heat storm that shot through her veins. She immediately felt the jerk of his body as he gave a sharp jerk of his head, a shock glazed his eyes as the movement immediately aligned his mouth with her own, a shallow breath away.

Gabe had always been one who knew what she wanted and how to get it, and she certainly had never been a woman to do it. In the split second she felt his breath, she didn't pause. You didn't think.

She just kissed him.

With everything in her heart thundered over the most earthbreaking moment of her young life.

She was in love!

Alex gasped, but the sound was swallowed by the press of Gabes lips, soft, smooth, and hungry, merged with his with a need that sparked his own. It was just a breath, but it seemed to be aeons that he was wrestling with his conscience and losing and returning Gabe's kiss with a fire that burned his soul. Her crutches fell to the floor as she tiptoed to put her arms around his neck, and her mouth merged with his into a pairing he never wanted to end. He lifted her off her feet and shaped her body with an intensity that shocked him. Groaning, he pushed her against the wall as his mouth explored hers. His passion was apparently buried so deep that he had never known it was there.

Well, he knew it now and it scared him silly.

"Gabe," he whispered in a hoarse voice as he carefully put her down again. He grabbed one of her crutches to gently push her under the arm of her evil leg, breathing as irregularly as hers. His heart ached as he cradled her face in his hands. "Please forgive me. I should never have done that

Her eyes widened. "No, Alex, there is nothing to forgive …"

"Yes, Gabe, there is." Trying to regain control, he took his hands off her face to get the second crutch and slowly put it under her other arm. He inhaled sharply, took a step back, and strengthened himself against the pain in her eyes. "I am your supervisor and I crossed the line, which should never have happened."

"But I kissed you!" There was an urgency in her voice that he had never heard before, a need that he didn't want to take advantage of.

He steeled his jaw, heart sick from what he had to do. "And I went one step further, Cadet, which I deeply regret."

"Well, not!" she screamed and staggered forward so fast that these blasted crutches wavered with his heart. His palm shot out reflexively and girded her waist to prevent both from falling.

Too late.

Sleet fell through his veins when he saw the longing in her eyes. "Don't you understand it, Alex?" she whispered, her face contorted with pain that caused some of his own. "I think I'm in love with you because I can't get you out of my head."

His body turned to stone. An unholy mixture of guilt and shock exhausted his air, fingers twitched from her waist as if he had been burned. And the look of bitter longing on Gabe's face told him that he had.

Burned as a PT.

Burned as a friend.

Burned as a man who knew better.
