Here are some thoughts I posted about John today on Facebook:

I'm just shocked and shaken and sad this morning, beyond what I can say.

My former student, John Powell, was killed last night by an 18-wheeler helping stranded motorists off a freeway. John leaves behind his precious wife Katherine and their young children, as well as the church where he was a pastor.

I just don't know what to say. John was one of the best men I have ever known – cheerful, humble, absolutely devoted to Jesus and Katherine and their children. He was all I would want my sons to have when they grow up.

John was in my Sunday school class, our men's Bible study, and my theology, ethics, and sermon classes at Southern. He was the first to build everything on every Sunday School scholarship. When someone was in need, he was the first there.

He was in our Thanksgiving house, his first semester in Southern, and told us about Katherine, how much he loved her, how he wanted nothing more than to marry her. It was obvious that this was the love of his life. I said, "Well, why not you?" He smiled, got up from the table, went straight to Missouri, and suggested. Everything was wrapped up in that smile.

In the years since, I have seen John excelling in the pastorate and, more importantly, the man, the husband, the father who he was. I was incredibly proud of him. I can't wait to see him again. And at the moment I'm just down.

Please pray for the Powells.

We love you John.

We are proud of you.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
